Announcements

Gardasil: The HPV Vaccine
Health Services continues to offer Gardasil, the HPV vaccine, to Wesleyan students. The vaccine has been recommended by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) for all females 9-26 years of age.  No Pap smear or screening is required prior to starting the vaccine. The vaccine requires three shots over six months; students who have received one or two of the shots from another provider may complete the cycle at Health Services.  The vaccine costs $150 per shot and can be billed to the student account; payment must be made at the time of appointment. Please call 860-685-2470 to schedule an appointment. Click here for complete details.

Insurance Waivers Deadline
This is the final notice regarding the annual requirement to waive or enroll in the university-sponsored health insurance.  The extended deadline to waive the university-sponsored plan is Monday, September 10.  If you have private insurance and do not want the university-sponsored plan (at a cost of $703), please make sure you go online and waive the plan at www.kosterweb.com. Failure to waive by September 10 will automatically enroll you in the plan and $703 will be billed to your student account in October.

No-Show Fee for Health Services
Due to the increase in no-show visits over the past few years, the Davison Health Center will begin to charge a $10 fee to any student who fails to cancel an appointment within 24 hours.  Please call 860-685-2470 during office hours (Monday – Thursday 9am – 7:00pm; Friday 9am – 5pm; Saturday 12 – 4pm) to schedule an appointment, and be sure to call the same number if you must cancel an appointment.  After hours, feel free to leave a message by calling 860-685-2470 and selecting option 1. Fees will be billed directly to student accounts.

This week's feature: The Food & Nutrition Information Center of the USDA National Agricultural Library provides a vast array of information on diet, nutrition, weight, food safety and more. Try clicking on Dietary Guidance (under Browse by Subject on the left side of the page) or Topics A to Z (on the top horizontal navigation bar) for a good starting point.

A Healthy Dose of Info on...Running Clubs

A.J.’s Journeys: Joining a Running Club

Woman workoutThe following article was submitted to Her Active Life by A.J. Melnikas (Wesleyan '04!) A.J. Melnikas currently works in clinical research. In the past, she has worked with non-profit health organizations targeting women’s and adolescent health issues. She will begin MPH studies in the fall. An avid runner and coach, A.J. has completed 4 marathons and is planning to run Boston next year. Her cultural adventures include studying in Spain, South Africa and Nepal; teaching English in China and traveling to France, Belize, Japan, Swaziland and the Dominican Republic.

In this new series, A.J. takes readers along for the ride as she moves to New York City and searches out the perfect running club. In part I, A.J. goes over what she needs out of a workout facility, and offers a sense of what any woman might want from their local gym.

One of the first things my friends asked when they found out I was moving to New York was “where will you run?” I guess they know me pretty well, and can’t imagine I’d be content to workout on a machine most days. It’s true that I always prefer the outdoors to a gym. That being said, I can’t count the number of times people have warned me about running alone in New York City. Now, you must understand that I am a cautious person; I look both ways before crossing the street, I check the locks on my door before going to sleep and I avoid running in sketchy areas. However, don’t run alone in Central Park...even when it’s light outside? I can understand being wary of running alone at night, or in the early morning before there are other people pounding the pavement. As a general rule it’s a good idea to run in areas frequented by others, but how could I possibly find people to run with more than once a week? And then it came to me - join a club.
