MELLON MAYS UNDERGRADUATE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

Spring  2008 Application

Due Thursday, March 6, 2008

1.      Complete the Applicant Information Sheet.

2.      Please read the attached information on the Mellon Mays Fellowship and the short biography of Dr. Benjamin Mays at http://www.mmuf.org/pages/mays.htm (the MMUF Website). Then explain, in at least 500 words, your commitment to the goals of the Fellowship and the ways in which you have contributed, and will continue to contribute, to the fulfillment of the Program’s mission.

3.      Earning a Ph.D. takes many years and much hard work, and a professor is expected to excel at teaching and mentoring, conducting research and publishing, and university service. Please explain, in 300-500 words, why you would want to make a commitment to a career as a professor and scholar and what qualities and capabilities you possess that you believe will make you successful in this career.

4.      Please outline, in at least 500 words, a scholarly project you would like to work on independently, with the support of a mentor, for the next two years. Be sure to describe the project in detail, explain its importance to you, and suggest how you might get started on your research. The project should be sufficiently ambitious to maintain your interest and evolve into a senior essay or honors thesis.

5.      Request three letters of recommendation:

a) One from a faculty member in a department related to the project you have outlined.

b) One from a faculty member from another department, or from your faculty advisor.

c) One from a fellow student, an administrator, a co-worker, or an employer.

Forms to accompany these letters are attached; please fill in the top portion before giving them to your recommenders.

The application and letters of recommendation are due Thursday, March 6, 2008 by 3:00 p.m. They must be delivered to Renée Johnson-Thornton, Associate Mellon Coordinator, at Butterfield B 315A.

Please sign up for an interview time once you have submitted your application.
