General Chemistry
Science has always been at the focal point of my interests, even before I really
knew what it meant to be a scientist. Fueled by a keen interest in nature and
spurred on by the nagging desire to understand "Why" and "How," I found myself
studying science in college, where chemistry became my first choice of
sciences.
After college, I served six years in the Coast Guard: two years as a Deck Watch
Officer/Boarding Officer aboard the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter VIGOROUS, followed
by four years of port safety/security duty with the Captain of the Port of
Mobile, Alabama. Having completed my service, I opted to return to chemistry as
a graduate student at The Ohio State University, when I was invited to return to
the Coast Guard Academy to join the Chemistry Faculty as a military instructor.
I
taught General Chemistry lecture and lab to the freshman cadets at the Coast
Guard Academy for four years, first as an instructor, then as an assistant
professor and course director. Sharing my passion for chemistry with others
turned out to be the best job that I had ever had -- which brought me here to
Wesleyan.
At the end of my tour at the Coast Guard Academy, I decided to continue my
education in chemistry at Wesleyan. When the opportunity arose, I jumped at the
chance to continue teaching General Chemistry, and so this semester, I am
privileged to be a Visiting Instructor assigned to CHEM 141 and 257. It is my
hope that I will be able to ignite an interest in chemistry in anyone open to
it.
